Soul

Soul sprung from a variety of sources, particularly gospel and blues. This piece has a hard-driving16th-note feel as well as a gospel-style tambourine on the off-beats:


The bass part follows the drums, but a very characteristic short off-beat from electric guitar creates a real soul feel:


In the backing for Lapping It Up  from American Popular Piano Level 3, the organ part refers even more specifically to soul’s gospel and blues roots:
